Tim Best is a visual artist based in Dallas Texas. There he has developed a practice of photography and video that addresses the fluidity of gender roles and identity in society. He uses cinematic fades and shot angles that allow the characters and locations in his images to flow back and forth in the image frame to create psychological narratives. These narratives suggest changes in gender identity in situations where socially normative roles, based on cliche or tropes, are complicated through actions and placement of the characters that challenge these roles. The message presented is a challenge to the single stereotype conjured by the appearance of their primary role.
